The First Flowers of the Year, Blooming Right Through the Snow
Snowdrops are the earliest bulbs to wake up, pushing slender blue-green leaves and nodding white bells through frozen ground while the rest of the garden is still asleep. Each stem holds a single teardrop-shaped flower that dangles above the foliage, unbothered by frost and late-winter cold snaps.
At just 6 inches tall, they tuck easily under deciduous trees, along walkways, at the front of beds, or into patio containers you can set by the door for a close-up look at the season's first bloom. Left alone, they naturalize and return in wider drifts each year, turning bare winter ground into something worth walking out to see.
Why You'll Love the Snowdrops
Blooms in late winter — flowers arrive weeks before crocus and daffodils, often through a dusting of snow.
Cold-hardy to Zone 3 — dependable in tough northern winters with no special protection.
Naturalizes freely — plant once and enjoy expanding colonies of white bells year after year.
Perfect for small spaces — 6-inch height suits borders, rock gardens, and container plantings.
Happy in sun or partial shade — ideal for planting under trees that leaf out after the show is over.
Plant a drift of Snowdrops this fall and give yourself something to look forward to in the middle of winter.
