It Started With a Melted Sign: The Story Behind Sandy Floors

Every small business has a beginning. Ours started at an outdoor market, under a blazing Florida sun, with a stack of signs that literally melted.

It Started With a Melted Sign

One weekend, my daughter and I set up for an outdoor vendor event. We had done what small makers and vendors do every weekend: packed the car, hauled everything in, built our display and hoped people would stop by.

Then the Florida heat took over.

The sun was relentless. There was almost no air movement. My daughter and I took turns resting, each of us trying to keep going while getting frighteningly close to blacking out. It became less about selling and more about simply making it through the event safely.

Even our signs couldn't take it. They warped and melted in the heat.

We had paid about $70 for a prime vendor spot, another $40 for parking, lost who-knows-how-much in damaged products, spent more than two hours setting up, four hours selling and another hour breaking everything down.

Sales for the day: about $20.

There Has to Be a Better Way

Driving home exhausted, dehydrated and suffering from the heat, one thought kept running through my head: There has to be a better way.

Not a replacement for farmers markets. We love farmers markets. We love meeting the person who made something, hearing the story behind it and finding products that would never appear on a big-box shelf.

What we needed was a way to keep that experience going after the tents came down.

A place where makers, crafters, farmers, family businesses and independent brands could still be discovered—not only by people who happened to walk past their booth that Saturday, but by shoppers across Florida, across the country and, one day, beyond.

We needed an online farmers market with the people left in.

That idea became Sandy Floors.

Products Are Better When You Know the People Behind Them

Traditional online shopping can become little more than a product, a price and an Add to Cart button. We wanted something different.

At Sandy Floors, we want you to meet the person who poured the candle, roasted the coffee, blended the skincare, baked the treat, designed the shirt, created the art or built the product you're considering bringing home.

We hand-pick small businesses and products we believe belong here, with a special commitment to Florida and Gulf Coast makers while welcoming great independent businesses from beyond our backyard too.

The product matters. The person and story behind it matter too.

A Marketplace Built to Help Small Businesses Grow

Sandy Floors was built around a simple idea: when our marketplace succeeds, that success should help the businesses inside it succeed too.

We don't want to simply collect marketplace fees and call the job finished. Our goal is to reinvest marketplace revenue into advertising, discovery, technology and programs that can introduce our vendors to customers they might never reach from a single booth.

A maker shouldn't have to hope the right customer happens to walk down the right street during the right four-hour window. We want to help extend that booth into a virtual stall that's open to a much bigger community.

Power in Numbers, Not Competition

Then we realized a marketplace wasn't enough.

Small businesses need more than another place to list products. They need people in their corner.

That's why we created the Sandy Floors Small Business Alliance: a growing community built around trust, service and businesses helping businesses.

Our commitment is straightforward: great products, good service, quick shipping, honest communication, fair treatment and quick problem resolution. We ask Alliance members to support one another too—to share advice, encourage new vendors, help another business learn from a mistake and look for opportunities to work together instead of treating every other small business as the enemy.

Our competition isn't the vendor in the next virtual stall. It's the idea that small businesses can't compete with the big guys.

And we believe this community can extend beyond the web. We want independent brick-and-mortar businesses, makers and community partners to be part of it too. Nobody has to put a Sandy Floors sign in their window. We'd love the support, of course—but community shouldn't come with strings attached.

Apparently, We Needed a Newspaper Too

Once we started building a community, we wanted to give people a reason to visit even when they weren't shopping.

So yes—we created a virtual newspaper too.

Sandy Floors Press is meant to be a quick read with your morning coffee, tea or energy drink. It's built for our vendors, shoppers and neighbors, with a focus on life around Florida's Gulf Coast and Central Florida.

We're developing useful local features including what's happening today, weather and outdoor conditions, boating information, events, theme-park conditions and our own experimental theme-park crowd calendar. We're collecting observations throughout the day and reviewing our results afterward so the project can become more useful over time.

And there's plenty more coming.

We're Building More Than a Store

Sandy Floors started because one terrible market day showed us how hard small businesses work just for the opportunity to be discovered.

We're building the thing we wished existed that day: part online farmers market, part boutique, part small-business community and part neighborhood gathering place.

We don't know exactly how far this idea will travel. But if it works, we want to grow together—not just as a store, but as a community.

So take your time. Wander through the Cottage. Visit the Farmers Market. Meet our vendors. Read their stories. Find an old favorite or discover something you didn't know existed yesterday.

Please, be OUR guest in our Cottage. And don't worry about getting the floors sandy. After all, sandy floors mean you're working hard and having a great time!
