Trusses of deep, true-red blooms in mid-to-late spring on one of the hardiest, most dependable rhododendrons you can grow.
Nova Zembla (Rhododendron x 'Nova Zembla') is a broadleaf evergreen shrub prized for its bold spring display: rounded clusters of ruby-red, funnel-shaped flowers, each marked with a darker burgundy blotch at the throat, set against glossy, dark green foliage that holds through winter. It builds into a dense, rounded mound roughly 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide at maturity, with a moderate, well-behaved growth rate. The classic upright trusses and leathery leaves give it a polished, structural look every season of the year, not just while it blooms.
Why growers choose the Nova Zembla
Striking red bloom. Few rhododendrons deliver a red this saturated and even; the spring trusses are large, full, and stand out against the dark foliage.
Cold-hardy and tough. Reliable down to zone 4, it shrugs off harsh winters that defeat many broadleaf evergreens, making it a go-to for northern gardens.
Year-round structure. The deep green, leathery leaves are evergreen, giving you presence and screening value long after the flowers fade.
Pollinator draw. The spring trusses attract bees and butterflies, with hummingbirds working the flowers during peak bloom.
Dependable and adaptable. A proven, vigorous cultivar that performs well in full to part sun and rewards minimal care with a consistent show.
It earns its place as a foundation anchor, a flowering evergreen hedge or screen, or a focal point in a woodland-edge or mixed shrub border, and pairs naturally with other acid-lovers like azaleas, pieris, and ferns for a layered, four-season planting.
