A fast, towering privacy screen that stays in a tidy clump — no aggressive runners to chase down.
Graceful Bamboo (Bambusa textilis 'Gracilis') is one of the most popular clumping bamboos for backyard screening, and for good reason. Slender, upright canes shoot up quickly to a mature height of 20 to 25 feet, topped with a soft, feathery canopy of fine green leaves that sways in the slightest breeze. Because it is a clumping bamboo, it expands slowly outward from a central base rather than sending rhizomes running across your yard — so a single planting matures into a dense vertical column just 4 to 8 feet wide. That combination of real height and a narrow footprint makes it ideal for tall privacy along fence lines, between two-story homes, or anywhere you need to screen a view fast without giving up half the yard.
Why growers choose Graceful Bamboo
Fast vertical privacy. A fast growth rate sends new canes up quickly each season, filling in a tall screen far sooner than most evergreen trees.
Clumping, not running. It stays in a contained, expanding clump instead of spreading by underground runners, making it the well-behaved, low-worry choice among screening bamboos.
Narrow footprint. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall but only 4 to 8 feet wide, it delivers serious height in tight side yards and along property lines.
Year-round green. The fine-textured evergreen foliage holds its color through the seasons in warm climates for a screen that never goes bare.
Graceful, soft texture. Arching canopies and delicate leaves give a relaxed, tropical look that softens hard fences and walls.
Plant a single specimen as a living accent, or set several in a row to build a tall, swaying privacy hedge, windbreak, or screen along a patio, pool, or boundary. In cooler regions it also makes a striking container or patio plant that can be moved to shelter.
