Growing up in Rhode Island, Halloween was always unpredictable. Some years my brothers, sister, and I bundled up in heavy winter coats before heading out to collect candy. Other years we somehow wore shorts and T-shirts. Regardless of the weather, one thing never changed—the excitement of Halloween and the arrival of pumpkin season.
After Halloween, pumpkins seemed to appear everywhere. School field trips to the pumpkin patch became an annual tradition. During the day the weather was perfect, but by evening the temperature dropped quickly. Looking back, I'm almost certain many mornings began with frost resting across the fields.
Now imagine adding a gentle ocean breeze and a layer of coastal mist rolling between the pumpkins.
