Dwarf Cavendish Banana (Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish') is a compact, fast-growing banana variety prized for its sweet, creamy fruit and adaptability to both tropical gardens and container growing. Originally developed for commercial production, this dwarf variety reaches only 6-8 feet tall, making it ideal for small spaces, patios, and greenhouses while still producing full-sized bananas.
Native to Southeast Asia, Dwarf Cavendish thrives in warm, humid climates (Zones 8-11) and prefers full sun, well-draining soil, and regular watering. It is known for its large, lush green leaves, which make it a striking ornamental plant in addition to being a prolific fruit producer. The bananas ripen to a rich yellow with a smooth, sweet flavor, perfect for fresh eating, smoothies, and desserts.
Dwarf Cavendish is self-pollinating and begins fruiting within 12-24 months under optimal conditions. In cooler regions, it can be grown in containers and moved indoors during colder months. With its high productivity, manageable size, and classic banana flavor, this variety is an excellent choice for home growers, edible landscapes, and food forests.
