Downeast

From Saturday-morning clothing sales before a sandwich shop opened to a Western apparel brand more than three decades in the making.

Why they made the Sandy Floors floor

Downeast has the kind of bootstrap story we love: a small beginning, steady reinvestment, and a business that kept evolving as the market changed. Today the brand focuses on approachable women’s clothing made for everyday life.

It started with a deal

Downeast traces its roots to 1991, when brothers Charlie, Bill and Jonathan Freedman began reselling discounted apparel. One of the brand’s best early chapters happened in Provo, Utah: clothing sales staged at Gandolfo’s Deli before the restaurant opened on Saturday mornings.

A tiny storefront, then a real brand

The operation moved into a small storefront and grew by putting money back into the business. As the supply of off-price branded merchandise changed, Downeast changed with it — moving from reselling other labels into designing and manufacturing its own clothing.

Still evolving

The business expanded across the western United States and changed ownership in 2020. Today Downeast is focused on women’s clothing designed around approachable style, fit and everyday wear.

The Sandy Floors take

We like businesses that have had to figure things out as they go. Downeast started scrappy, grew deliberately, changed its model when the market changed, and kept building. That earns them a spot in our Small Business Stories.
